HPV Self-Swabbing

Making cervical screening easier with self-swabbing

Cervical screening in New Zealand has transitioned to a simpler, more effective method: the HPV swab test. This test offers the option of self-testing, making cervical screening more accessible and convenient.

Regular cervical screening is vital for detecting abnormal cell changes early, preventing cervical cancer. The new test replaces the traditional smear test, which required a sample from the cervix. Now, a simple vaginal swab can detect HPV:

Self-test option: You can perform the test in a private area at our clinic.

Assisted option: A nurse or doctor can perform the swab for you.

If HPV is detected, additional testing may be required.

Do you need to screen?

Most cervical cancers are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is spread through sexual activity or intimate skin-to-skin contact.

  • We recommend screening for people aged 25–69 with a cervix (including trans or non-binary individuals) who have been sexually active or had intimate skin contact.

  • Screen every 5 years, or every 3 years if immunocompromised.

  • If you’ve had a hysterectomy, check with your nurse or GP about your screening needs.
