Empowering healthier lives

Nurse practitioners (NPs) are highly skilled healthcare professionals who serve as primary care providers, offering trusted care comparable to that of general practitioners (GPs).

Combining advanced nursing expertise with medical knowledge, NPs diagnose, prescribe, and manage treatment plans for a wide range of health conditions, from common illnesses to complex cases.

Nurse Practitioners are trained to take a comprehensive, holistic view of patient health. We consider not just the medical issue at hand, but also the patient's overall wellbeing, lifestyle, and social determinants of health. This allows us to develop personalised care plans that address the whole person.

What nurse practitioners do

  • Provide comprehensive healthcare for individuals and families.

  • Diagnose conditions and prescribe medications with the same authority as GPs.

  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests and laboratory results.

  • Refer patients to specialists and hospital services when necessary.

  • Focus on preventative care and holistic health management.

A globally recognised profession

Nurse practitioners have been part of New Zealand’s healthcare landscape since 2001. NPs often work in areas with limited access to GPs, filling a critical gap in the healthcare system. NPs bring extensive experience—on average, 15 years of clinical practice—prior to becoming certified.

Nurse practitioners undergo rigorous education and certification to ensure high standards of care:

  • Education: Completion of a master’s degree, including advanced clinical and prescribing competencies.

  • Clinical experience: A minimum of five years in a specialty area before registering.

  • Certification: Demonstration of competency through a portfolio and an oral assessment panel.

  • Ongoing training: Regular submission of evidence to maintain certification with the Nursing Council of New Zealand.
